This Year's Project: Making The FurKids Temporary Home Even Better

About Our Organization

Our organization is committed to keeping pets safe, happy and healthy while they wait to be placed in a forever home. Since 1983 the McCook Humane Society has provided a temporary home for puppies and kittens, as well as adult dogs, cats and any temporarily homeless pet. We are dedicated to finding permanent, loving homes for abused, neglected, and abandoned animals in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas. We strive to be as low kill as possible and give them every opportunity to find forever homes. Our motto is: Saving just one pet won't change the world, but surely, the world will change for that one pet!

Current Project: Making The FurKids Temporary Home Even Better

Our biggest current project is to continue to upgrade our aging facility. As it has most, these past few years have hit us hard. Along with the challenges we've faced while providing continuing care for the temporarily homeless in our care, we've had a surge in multiple animal intakes due to the economy, animals that need more medical attention and socialization (requiring longer housing and manpower) while still managing to meet our own and neighboring communities' needs. Our ongoing mission is providing the best care possible for the temporarily homeless furkids in the community until they find their forever homes, reuniting the lost with their families, education of responsible pet ownership and offering assistance to those in need, just to start. We are constantly upgrading and updating our facility. Because of your awesome past help and support, we've come a long way, upgrading our computer and software system, installing front building ramp and handrails, storage building, stainless steel sinks & tubs, and so much more. We have big plans for the future. The building is older and showing it's age, we've been updating and upgrading, and we invite you to come check out the progress so far. We are now in the stages of replacing our temporarily homeless friends' "housing", starting in the cat room and working our way through to the main kennel. We thank you and again ask for your continued support to complete this project.

Because of your past help and support, we've come long way and we have big plans for the future! This year we are looking for donations to help with the operational costs of taking care of the temporary homeless furkids. In addition to the rising cost of supplies, we’ve had to have repairs to HVAC, plumbing electricity, and roof. The dog kennel area is in need of new floor and we’ve implemented new process that required new computer to help reunite the pets with their families that much quicker.

We here at the McCook Humane Society would like to extend our most heartfelt thanks for your generous donations in the past. People never fail to amaze us with their love and support. Your past gifts have enabled us to continue in our mission to care for the temporarily homeless furkids in the community, reunite the lost with their families, promote responsible pet ownership and offer assistance to those in need, just to start.

Our biggest current project is to continue to upgrade our facility. This past year hit us hard, as it has everyone. Along with the challenges we've faced with providing continuing care for the temporarily homeless in our care during this unusual time, we've had a surge in multiple animal rescues and animals that need more medical attention and socialization (requiring longer housing and manpower) while still managing to meet our own and neighboring communities' needs. Which brings us to our other main and constant project, which is education, to help with Responsible Pet Ownership and to help animals receive proper care, and forever homes. We do all of this while continuing in our constant mission of providing the best care possible for the temporarily homeless furkids in the community, reuniting the lost with their families, promoting responsible pet ownership and offering assistance to those in need, just to start. Pictured is "Trooper", a dog who was stabbed multiple times and miraculously survived the ordeal. He was adopted into a loving home.

Our project, our mission, remains the same. To find forever homes for all of our temporarily homeless furry friends housed at the McCook Humane Society.
